Do people need to download the app to text me back?

It is not required, however, we highly recommend that they download the app as it will result in a better user experience. If they download the app, they'll also have access to additional functionality.

As a hotspot owner, if you send an SMS to a friend or family member from the app, they can continue the conversation via SMS if they desire. However, if you were to send a message to their email, they cannot reply to the email to continue the conversation. If they created a Somewear account with the associated email, then they could message back using the Somewear mobile app.
